The Patek Philippe Nautilus reference 3700 is one of the defining designs of modern watchmaking. Conceived by Gérald Genta and introduced in 1976, the original “Jumbo” transformed the idea of the luxury sports watch through its porthole-inspired case, integrated bracelet, horizontally embossed dial, and remarkably slim profile. A circa 1978 example belongs to the earliest years of the Nautilus story, when its combination of stainless steel, unconventional proportions, and exceptional finishing represented a radical departure for Patek Philippe.
Nearly five decades later, the purity of the original 3700 remains difficult to improve upon. Its automatic calibre 28-255 C allowed the case to remain exceptionally thin, while the broad integrated bracelet and expansive case gave the watch a presence unlike almost anything else of its era. More than simply the first Nautilus, the 3700 established a design language that has endured across generations and remains one of the clearest expressions of Genta’s singular approach to proportion, architecture, and restraint.
